Marta Grigorieva is renowned as a portrait painter of distinction, admired for her ability to capture the hearts and souls of her illustrious sitters. Her paintings grace countless private collections in Britain, the USA and throughout Europe, and her work has been exhibited extensively in New York, London, Milan and Turin.

Marta was born in Russia into a medical and musical family. After studying pianoforte and violin at the St. Petersburg preparatory school for the Conservatory, she achieved a BA in economics at Moscow Technological University.

In 1990, taking advantage of Perestroika, she moved to New York City, working as an intern in the Russian department at Christie’s, specializing in Faberge. In 1996, strengthening her interest in fine arts, Marta attended Harvard Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, reading fine art and art history; and on her return to New York the following year, while working at Sotheby's, she began to study portrait and figure painting with the leading American portraitist Nelson Shanks at the Art Student League.

While acknowledging Shanks as her mentor, Marta soon began to carve out a name for herself as a portrait painter in her own right. She has received major commissions from, among others, the late Senator Edward Kennedy, UBS vice-chairman Phillip Byrne, Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees, the Nobel Laureate in Economics Robert Mundell, HRH Princess Michael of Kent and Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou, the founder of Easy Jet.

At the same time as continuing to expand the conventions of figurative painting, focusing on revealing the various and often hidden aspects of her subjects’ inner worlds, Marta has also explored a dazzling array of other media, styles and subjects, including murals, trompe l’oeil and plein air landscape. Her oeuvre is distinguished throughout by its exceptional use of colour and light and is constantly evolving.
